What is Ondel-ondel?
Ondel-ondel is an inseparable part of Betawi culture, as well as being an icon of the city of Jakarta.
Ondel-ondel is generally made of wood with the body part using dongdang, which is a type of chicken cage made of bamboo.

What is history of Ondel-ondel?
Historically, ondel-ondel is said to have existed before 1600 AD.This explanation was written by an English merchant named W. Scot in his travel book. In his notes, Scot admitted that he saw a unique culture in the form of a giant doll that was displayed by the Sunda Kelapa people in traditional ceremonies. Although the name is not mentioned, the type is believed to be similar to ondel-ondel.
Meanwhile, according to stories passed down by elders in Betawi, ondel-ondel has existed since the time of the ancestors. In the past, ondel-ondel was made for the rejection ceremony. The rejection ceremony is held to ward off disease outbreaks that attack villages or disturbances of spirits that roam around.
Currently, ondel-ondel is still often used to enliven people's parties, weddings, or welcoming distinguished guests, for example during the inauguration of a newly built building.

wow I just found out about the history, thanks oktia for the information.by the way the name is similar to the famous snack in Mojekerto namely onde onde.😁
BalasHapusOmggg, actually ondel-ondel is reallly awesome i think, and you know and I have read that the ondel-ondel dance symbol is one of the traditional arts typical of the Betawi tribe which has a symbol of strength in maintaining security, toughness, courage, firmness, honesty and order in society. which means ondel-ondel is very culturally valuable☺
BalasHapusThank you oktari for the information about onde onde.
BalasHapusOnde onde is aBetawi culture that must be preserved so that it does not become extinct, but the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government forbids ondel-ondel to roam the streets which are used as a tool for singing or begging. In his statement, the provincial government assessed that the use of ondel-ondel for begging is currently very disturbing.

BalasHapusThis is a good information, thank you. Based on my observation, ondel-ondel is very popular in Jakarta city. Moreover, ondel-ondel has historically been a hallmark of the Betawi tribe. Ondel-ondel is very unique and reflecting the history of Jakarta.
BalasHapusoh my god, so awesome. But i'm afraid when i see the ondel-ondel. Because its face so scary. Even though I'm afraid, I'm still proud of the cultural characteristics that exist in Jakarta.
BalasHapusthank you for the information it is very interesting oktia. I think ondel ondel is very unique because in it there are people who play a role in moving it, and in my opinion this is not easy therefore it would be better if we appreciate the value contained in it.
